New indie music artists - Research

For preparation for our music video, i have been researching many indie artists which can relate to our band 'Remedy'. I want to be able to understand the indie genre and be able to relate our band to similar indie artists.

I have been looking through indie artists/bands which are very mainstream and are very well known.

Bands/Artists
  • Vampire Weekend
  • Arctic Monkeys
These are two are well known bands in the indie industry which can relate to our all boy band, each band are very similar by them all being in the indie genre and also from them being able to relate to similar songs which include sadness, emotion and hurt.

Vampire Weekend

They portray as a really cheeky unique band, they look like they understand there music and have a lot meaning behind songs. But they are very funky and also very different. Our band isn't similar to this type of music they are producing, but they are their own individual type of band which shows audiences they are a indie genre band. I enjoyed exploring there website and YouTube account as it showed me how we could portray our band.

Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkey are more of an grown up indie band as they have been producing many different songs for many many years. So out of the bands i am looking at these are the most mature ones. When exploring there website and YouTube account i discovered their song called 'Do i wanna know'. It has a very interesting video which is such a simple music video, it changes to the music/lyrics but i has an interesting beat to it.

Representation

In the pictures below we was to analyse three different pictures and describe the semiotics. Each image represents an opinion given out by three different media theorists. The first image we see in a still of the boy-band One Direction. This image reflects upon their independence and the fact that they're living the dream.
In the second image uses the Mulvey theory which is the male gaze. You see in the image that there is an symmetrical setting balancing the lighting on the older men, and makes Rhianna stand out. The lighting shows that the men are hiding there identity, but you can see they are wearing suit which shows class in this image. The image is very much like a piece of art as you can see a lot of different lighting, shades and Rhinana in the middle.

In the third image you can see that the young artist is in the new man image, you can see this as he looks like he is in a boy band by wearing fashionable clothing and having natural hair and make up. You see in his facial expressions that he is emotional and that he is in a room with people but looks very out of place. The main focus is George in the centre of the room as you can see the lighting is set up to make him stand out. George is very carefree in this image and he looks very young, natural, fresh and young.
