Health and Safety Information

Throughout our music video we needed to be aware of the health and safety regulations that withstood. Some of these health and safety factors included things such as; carrying the equipment which included the camera, tripod and musical instruments. We had to be aware that we didn't drop anything on ourselves or anyone else, we also needed to make sure that we weren't carrying any equiptment that was too heavy for us.  We had to be aware of the weather conditions so that we knew it was suitable to film, being sensible at the train station as there were fast trains passing and we didn't want to obstruct any passengers or putting any equiptment anywhere where the members of the public could injure themselves. This also meant that we had to ensure someone was being aware of the equiptment and make sure it wasn't left unatended at any point in time. We had to be aware of the green screen across the floor and the musical instruments so that we didn't trip up.

All in all, we had to be cautious with the majority of our music video making sure that there wasn't any possibility that anyone could get hurt.

Below is an image of our green screen room. We had to be aware that we didn't trip over when using the room as there was loose fabric around which could be dangerous.

Above is another image of loose wires that we had to be careful of. It's very dangerous incase we trip over and hurt ourselves on the wires or the radiators near.

Album Cover Designs

Our group designed these two album covers, The first one is very indie and focuses on the main band member. It is very easy to see the album name and artist, this is good because it allows it to be easily identified and can draw the audiences attention. The simple image is very effective as it can attract the target audience as well as attracting people who may not be interested in the genre of the band.

The second one uses autumn colours to match the scenery, this allows it to focus on the only band member in shot and makes the title of the band stand out as it is in a brighter colour.

Overall we decided that we prefer the first one because it attracts the target audience more and is more appropriate for the genre of music. It is also simple which allows the name and band member to stand out more which is what we were looking for.

Alterations to our music video

Throughout the time it has taken us to produce this music video, we have had to make a lot of changes along the way. A lot of them have benefited us in positive ways and we feel that they have improved our music video, album/dvd pack.

First of all we had a few issues with filming as we originally wanted to film in a barn and use hay stacks to add a quirkiness to our video but we soon fond out that there were few barns in the area to be able to use and those that we could use weren't suitable for what we needed it for. Due to this we had to change our storyboard and rethink of some ideas. We eventually decided that we would have the main protagonist in a bed waking up but due to illness and lack of film we were unable to film that part as well.
After a lot of thought and going back to the drawing board we came up with the idea of having Connor, the protagonist and lead singer to show his side of the story and narrate the lyrics and explain them in an interesting way. This idea flowed very well with the footage we had and we soon had most of our music video filmed. We as a group decided that The Night Riots, Remedy could be placed in the genre of performance as well as narrative and we soon developed lots of ideas using the green screen room.
Using the green screen was where most of our problems became evident when we had to film three separate times due to the footage not working on the computer and the fact we over looked that the drum kit we were using was blue and that this would be taken out when we edited it on Final Cut Express. However this meant that we were able to be more creative with our music video and we went back to the drawing board again to come up with some ideas to replace the slots where most of our performance would go. This worked out perfectly because they day we decided to film our location was covered in fog and mist and we all agreed that this effect worked really well with the style of music video we were aiming for. The fog also looked amazing when we edited it on the macs which worked out really well in our favor.

Due to illness of all of our team members we were unable to film some of the ideas we had put down on our storyboard which meant that our storyboard doesn't look a lot like the final piece of our music video but we are all very proud at how it has turned out and we all feel like it has benefited us by allowing us to have a quirkier video then we were originally expected it to be.

In depth analysis of three music videos in our genre

Our song (Night Riots- Remedy) is categorised under Indie/Rock genre. However, our song isn't very well known therefore, I will be listing three other popular Indie/Rock songs from three different famous Indie/Rock bands.

1 ) Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire

Kings Of Leon are well-known rock band which have produced some very successful songs such as 'Sex On Fire' and 'Use Somebody'. This song illustrates the performance element which relates to our song/music video. In this music video, the performance factor is displayed by the band being together during the majority of the video. There is no stage however, the band are seen playing their instruments together in a isolated scene. The band are positioned in front of a dark background whilst having some light reflected upon them, which reflects upon the performance element in the music video.

2) Foo Fighters - The Pretender

Foo Fighters are another famous rock band that have produced some well-known, popular rock songs such as 'The Pretender' and 'All My Life'. This song also portrays the performance element that is key for our music video. During the majority of this video, the same background, the same positioning of the band members and the same setting is used. The whole video is based around performance and focuses on the strength of the band. The band is shown in front of a red background in a warehouse which has bright floors and dark walls.

3) 30 Seconds To Mars - The Kill

30 Seconds To Mars are another significant rock band that relate to our music video genre. They have produced some lucrative, prosperous songs such as 'The Kill' and 'From Yesterday'. This song in particular focuses on the narrative element which is the other key factor that relates to our music video genre. During the video, the band are seen entering a lost, forgotten hotel, in which the band members see clones of themselves which is shown in the image above. During the video some of the band members die and therefore, reflects upon the songs title 'The Kill'. The majority of this video is based around the narrative element.

Lip Syncing Practice

We filmed our fist attempt of lip syncing in the green screen room because we felt like this was the best place to perform. It is quiet in there and we are able to add our own background to it once we edit the clip successfully.

We filmed our sequence a few times so that Connor could get a feel of what it is like lip syncing and he could practice getting the words in time with the song. It took a few attempts to get the feel of it and to film it successfully because Connor needed to learn the lyrics better and we wanted to see where the best place/position would be to have him on camera.

There was an issue with trying to get the music downloaded from one device to another. We eventually found their website to which if you sign up you get a free download of their song which made the process of adding the music a whole lot easier for everyone in the group.

Costume, make-up and hair planning

One Direction - the look we don't want
For our costume, make-up and hair planning, i decided to take the role of creating the outfits for the Actors/Artists. We as a group decided to stay away for the One Direction, typical boy band look and wanted to be more creative by choosing an outfit which will suit the music video and in some way the Indie look.

We looked at many different indie/rock bands to see if we could compare them to our artist. Some of the actors used in the music videos can have a unique look about them, every single band have their own different look. Some bands like to look smart, while others feel comfortable in baggy tops and skinny jeans this is the usual look you get from a Indie/Rock group.

Our artist will be wearing a shirt with a loose tie and jeans, this is due to him sleeping in a barn with some alcohol this will show us that he is still in last nights clothes. The loose tie will show that he was dressed smart but due to sleeping on a haystack this will show he isn't smart dressed from the night before. In the morning when he wakes up his make-up will show that he is tired from not sleeping that much and he has a very bad hangover from drinking. You will see this in the scene as bottles will be floating around. From this the make-up wont be noticeable at all and this will allow him still to look very natural. His hair will be very messy, he will have the 'bed hair look'.

In the music video there will be a female involved too she will be wearing indie clothing, she will be wearing skinny jeans with a t-shirt with a coat. Her hair will be in a middle parting - with a scruffy curls look. This may change when filming, as we aren't too sure about the female look.

Throughout the filming things may change, depending on how the look is during the music video.

Deconstruction of lyrics

Lay down in my bed I slip into
fevered dreams where I'm missing you -
Looking back and thinking of a lost lover?
Don't call me on the phone I could talk with anyone - Regretting missing someone, not wanting them back.
I need you here I want you now - Wanting them back again,
So hurry home the quickest route -
Needing them, singing to someone.

Woahhh Woahhh Woaahhh

Hear that train it comes calling out -
train represents moving on with love?
Shadows closing fears that I can't tell - doors closing on their love?

Don't call me on the phone I could talk with anyone -
Don't call. Doesn't want another relationship
I need you here I want you now - Admitting the love
So hurry home the quickest route - Needing someone, lost without them.
Woahh Woahh Woahh

Cause you're my Remedy my only cure, -
Juxtaposed with 'don't call me...'
You're my remedy the quickest cure - Confessing love for them.

Don't call me on the phone I could talk with anyone -
Juxtaposed with 'my only cure'
I need you here I want you now - Final admitting of lobe
So hurry home the quickest route - Come back. He is 'home'

Mood Board

This is a mood board for bands that we feel will help and inspire us for our music video. There are bands which we feel all focus on different elements in their songs such as focusing more on the instrumental element and some focusing on the vocal element.

Iconic directors of music video

The three iconic music video directors I have chosen for this task are; Chris Cunningham, David Fincher and Derek Pike.

Chris Cunningham made his directorial debut in 1997 with the music video for "Come to Daddy" by Aphex Twin, which was instantly praised, banned, and raved about by many people in the business. He followed up by making the music video for "Windowlicker" by Aphex Twin and the famous "All is Full of Love" video by Bjork. Recently, he made his short-film debut, "Flex,". His incredible style alone makes him a director to watch out for in later years.

David Fincher started his career by working for ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) from 1981-83. He then went on to direct TV commercials and music videos after signing on with N. Lee Lacy in Hollywood.  David Fincher has directed TV commercials for clients that include Nike, Coca-Cola, Budweiser, Heineken, Pepsi, Levi's, Converse, AT&T and Chanel. He has directed music videos for Madonna, Sting, The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, George Michael and most recently, A Perfect Circle.

Derek Pike is originally a film-maker from New York, United States. However, he is also known as a  good music video producer. Most of his music video's are narrative based. At 21, he became one of the youngest directors to have a music video featured on MTV. The majority of artists Derek Pike has created music videos for are Rap artists such as; XV, Wiz Khalifa, Aloe Blacc, Consequence and Joell Ortiz

Comparisons of different representations from different genres

Kodaline - All I Want
I am going to compare two different songs from the same genre of indie rock. Above us we have Kodaline with All I Want where the video which is the second of two and is a narrative. We also have Passenger with Let Her Go which is a performance video. Whilst watching both videos we can instantly see the differences of Kodaline telling a story within their video. In some aspects I feel like this is the best type of video because it draws the attention in of the audience and makes you feel a lot of emotion whilst watching the poor man/gremlin lose his dog. However Passenger also achieves this by having a very simplistic video of performing his song to a small crowd. It makes it seem as if it is very personal with the crowd and the audience who are watching this.
Passenger - Let Her Go.

One Direction - Best Song Ever

One Direction and Union J both belong to the pop, boy band and therefore have similar music videos. One Directions music video is just over 6 minutes long and the start consists of the boys dressing up in their managers office and performing a little play. It then continues to be music video with a slight rocky feel to it as they continue to trash the room and throw everything about. Union J is more of a feel good music video where they narrate at the beginning and it then leads to a performance at the end which again feels very personal and as if you have a front seat to their gig. However this is taken away slightly as they don't sing to the camera like One Direction do.

Union J - Carry You

Green Screen Practice

Over a couple of lessons we managed to record some footage of Will and Conor in the green screen room. We then uploaded the footage to Final Cut Express and had our first attempt at green screen with a moving background rather than a still image.

It was good to be able to use the cameras and learn how to complete green screen effectively, however, it was very difficult to learn when we were unfamiliar with the software we were using.

New indie music artists - Research

For preparation for our music video, i have been researching many indie artists which can relate to our band 'Remedy'. I want to be able to understand the indie genre and be able to relate our band to similar indie artists.

I have been looking through indie artists/bands which are very mainstream and are very well known.

Bands/Artists
  • Vampire Weekend
  • Arctic Monkeys
These are two are well known bands in the indie industry which can relate to our all boy band, each band are very similar by them all being in the indie genre and also from them being able to relate to similar songs which include sadness, emotion and hurt.

Vampire Weekend

They portray as a really cheeky unique band, they look like they understand there music and have a lot meaning behind songs. But they are very funky and also very different. Our band isn't similar to this type of music they are producing, but they are their own individual type of band which shows audiences they are a indie genre band. I enjoyed exploring there website and YouTube account as it showed me how we could portray our band.

Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkey are more of an grown up indie band as they have been producing many different songs for many many years. So out of the bands i am looking at these are the most mature ones. When exploring there website and YouTube account i discovered their song called 'Do i wanna know'. It has a very interesting video which is such a simple music video, it changes to the music/lyrics but i has an interesting beat to it.

Hall's Reception Theory

If you click on this link it will take you to our prezi on the Hall's Reception Theory

Active Audience Theory

Uses and gratifications theory (Blumler and Katz)

Blumler and Katz describe how we as an audience describe how we consume media, the theory lets people use media in different ways, you can show Information, Personal Identity, Entertainment, integration and Social interaction. Lets the audience decide what way they want to see the music video and the music itself.

Representation

In the pictures below we was to analyse three different pictures and describe the semiotics. Each image represents an opinion given out by three different media theorists. The first image we see in a still of the boy-band One Direction. This image reflects upon their independence and the fact that they're living the dream.
In the second image uses the Mulvey theory which is the male gaze. You see in the image that there is an symmetrical setting balancing the lighting on the older men, and makes Rhianna stand out. The lighting shows that the men are hiding there identity, but you can see they are wearing suit which shows class in this image. The image is very much like a piece of art as you can see a lot of different lighting, shades and Rhinana in the middle.

In the third image you can see that the young artist is in the new man image, you can see this as he looks like he is in a boy band by wearing fashionable clothing and having natural hair and make up. You see in his facial expressions that he is emotional and that he is in a room with people but looks very out of place. The main focus is George in the centre of the room as you can see the lighting is set up to make him stand out. George is very carefree in this image and he looks very young, natural, fresh and young.
